I don't know how I missed these videos before.

I have updated the post above, and added a new post with the videos here for those who have already read the article.

That should make it clear to any lurking creationists that it's an illustration of a principle, and not to be taken as hard evidence.

Thanks!

That would definitely be an important point to make if I were using those drawings to make any claims about all vertebrates sharing common "phylotypic stages."

As it is, I think that would have been cumbersome to explain and it's beyond the scope of the article. I simply used the drawings as a quick illustration of the very basic concept for people who haven't a clue what early embryos look like across species.

In fact, the whole beginning of the article is about how there is NOT a recapitulation of phylogeny through development. Different species have very different courses of development. And I tried to be careful in my language to say that fish gill pouches are only similar to human pharyngeal arches. They are certainly very different as well. I just wanted to point out that there are specific developmental processes that possess some similarity, simply due to their evolutionary history.

But I'm still very glad you made the comment, and provided the link for others to read. I would never use that picture when writing to a scientific audience. Hopefully my writing made it clear that I was targeting people who know next to nothing about development.

I will certainly add a little disclaimer into the caption.

I'm sorry to have "unsettled" you, Bjørn. And I most certainly hope you will continue to stop by considering your obvious developmental knowledge.

I find it a little unsettling that you would include Romanes' copy of Haeckel's embryo drawing without mentioning the simplifications made at the phylotypic stage.

Gotta say, so far I am loving this series!
This one is a classic too. Thanks for explaining the Haeckle theory in a way that my son really connected with too!

I love when I see the flatfish swimming around at about a 45 degree angle before the settle to the bottom completely.
